My Review:
3.5/5 stars. This book took a long time to actually get going, and there were a lot of overly-long descriptions, especially at the beginning. I liked the last third of it the best, once Gamora and Nebula were actually together.
The biggest negative about this book were the long, clunky descriptions. It mostly went away after the first few chapters, bit the beginning was full of descriptions of the setting that went on for sentences - even paragraphs. It’s good to be descriptive and give sensory details to help readers paint a picture, not the descriptions were way too long in this book. Every little detail was given, to the point where I actually couldn’t picture it in my mind and got lost. The amount of setting description felt like it was being written for a movie script, where you have to be very detailed, not a book with room for imagination.
Later on, the long descriptions were used for some of the actions. Again, it felt like the author was writing a movie script. Every single hand movement and the specifics of how a weapon was held were given. It made those actions scenes hard to follow because of all the descriptions that made the scenes feel so much more cluttered.
I’m not a Gamora and Nebula expert, but I felt like they were written like how they are in the movies. They were both kind of anti-heroes at this point, since this is pre-Infinity Saga, so they often did wrong things for the right reasons, and only worked for themselves. At times, Gamora’s actions were almost villainous, but then she would do something great later on.
Gamora and Nebula joinging together, and everything after that, was the best part. I loved seeing them promising each other to stick together no matter what. I liked that the sisters reflected on the fact that they were still sisters who loved each other, despite everything Thanos put them through. This bond made the ending all the more compelling yet frustrating.
Comtent Guide:
Language: a**, b**ch, h*ll, d*mn, p*ss, ba***rd, d*ck, w**re, a character flips another character off
Sexual Content: it was never stated, but it seemed like the planet they were on was a women-only, lesbian planet. In a bar, another woman talks suggestively to Gamora, another character frequently mentions her two mothers, another character says “who’s your girlfriend?” when a character and Gamora are together.
Drugs/Alcohol: Gamora goes to a bar, mentions of people being drunk
Violence/Gore: lots of action-movie fighting - stabbing, shooting, kicking and punching - descriptions of medical procedures and wounds, blood
