The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart - Review

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

Book Synopsis: Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?"

Dozens of children respond to this peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children-two boys and two girls-succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.

My review: 4/5 stars. I had to read this book as a school assignmen, but I’m glad i did. Although it’s a little more juvenile than most of the books I read, its still a great book for teens and even adults to read. If you‘re a fan of the Harry Potter series, this book has similar vibes.

My favorite part of this book was the characters. They're all so different with their own unique personalities and quirks. In the span of just one book, I already grew to love them. Kate is probably my favorite, with her spunky personality and constant motivation to get things done. She's such a quick thinker when the team is in trouble and is great at narrowly escaping danger using what's available. The character I relate to the most, however, is Reynie. I'm great at problem-solving and figuring out puzzles and, like Reynie, I'm a strong leader but need my friends. Although the book was kind of slow and a little boring towards the middle, once I got to a certain point closer to the end, I was really into it and didn't want to stop reading. I loved trying to figure out the mystery and codes along with the characters and sometimes wished I was there with them to help. Overall, it was a great book.

There are three more books in this series (plus a spin-off prequel) and I will definitely be reading them some time in the future.
