Book Synopsis:
Not everyone is lucky at Christmas. Some people would call 16-year-old Liz Kitchell and her family truly fortunate, but it doesn't feel that way to her. It seems that only a miracle can give 8-year-old Katie her holiday wish. She wants a family, something she does not have as a foster child. As for 17-year-old Matt, he too is in a foster home and is finally letting himself feel a sense of belonging. When he allows himself to do a good deed for Katie, he doesn't realize what would happen. Is the spirit of Christmas strong enough to grant the impossible?
My Review:
4/5 stars. This was a very sweet and cute story about Christmas, family, and hope. I loved all of the main characters and was rooting for them. The ending wasn't exactly what I expected, but it was still very nice.
Liz's parents were written to be very insufferable, because I really disliked them. At first, I thought they were written like that so that their redemption in the end would be bigger and better. However, they didn't fully have a huge redemption. This ties into how I thought the ending would be different. Going into the story, I thought Liz's parents would adopt Matt and Katei and they would all become a family, but that didn't happen. Towards the end, I realized Liz's sister would be the one to adopt Katie before it was fully revealed, but the plot was not as predictable as I thought.
Similarly, even though I knew that things would work out and be happy in the end, I still was invested in the story and wanted to find out how it would happen. I knew the outcome would be good, but I didn't know the events that would lead up to it. I read the last 2/3rds of the book in one sitting because it was fast-paced and I was invested.
I loved the three main characters in different ways. With Liz, I loved how empathetic she was despite how terrible her parents were. Matt was closed off, but I felt for him because he had been through so much in his life. Katie was adorable, and I loved how much hope she had and how innocent she was.
