My Review:
4/5 stars. This book had a pretty simple, straightforward plot, yet it was still very interesting and engaging. The characters weren't very deep, but they were likable. One thing that bothered me, though, were the few typos scattered throughout. It made it seem like the book wasn't polished fully. However, it was overall enjoyable, and I really liked the ending. If there was a sequel, I would read it.
Early on, I noticed the writing style in this book. It wasn't bad or hard to read, but it also wasn't the most beautiful. It was simple, and actually kind of reminded me of my own writing style a little bit. However, like I already mentioned, the typos that somehow made it past the editing process stuck out and annoyed me. A few times, for example, there was an apostrophe when it should've been just plural.
I don't know if this would be considered a full dystopian, but it was definitely a future version of our world with differences in rules, technology, etc. A little bit of the backstory was shared, but I would've liked to know more about "the great war" between Christians and non-Christians, and how the world got to be the way it was.
One aspect I loved was that one of the themes was the power of writing. The characters used written word, flyers, and poetry to spread their message, and paper was rationed, making it even more powerful that they were using it. As a writer, any book that is about writing in some way is always going to get points.
This book had a great ending. It felt a tiny bit rushed, but it was also very hopeful and triumphant. I was smiling the whole last few pages. It wrapped the events of this book up nicely, but also left it open for a sequel, which I would definitely read if it ever was written.
